Alpine adventure capital

(01) — A field note

An alpine resort town wrapped around a glacier-cut lake — equal parts adrenaline capital and quietly refined hospitality.

01

The setting

Queenstown sits on the shore of Lake Wakatipu in Central Otago, framed by The Remarkables and Cecil Peak. The town was founded during the 1860s gold rush and now draws visitors year-round for skiing, hiking and lake-side life.

02

How to eat

The compact centre packs in long lunches at Gibbston Valley wineries (just 25 minutes east), lake-front bistros on Steamer Wharf, and the world-famous Fergburger queue on Shotover Street. Arrowtown, 20 minutes away, offers historic stone cottages turned cafés.

03

Where to stay

Choose between alpine lodges along the lake (Kelvin Heights, Glenorchy Road), boutique hotels in town, or self-contained chalets in Arthur's Point. Winter rates peak July–September; shoulder season May and November are quieter and warmer-priced.
