Questions we're asked most.

Straight answers on seasons, cost and how long to stay — then pick the route that fits.

When is the best time to visit New Zealand?

December to February is New Zealand's summer and the warmest, busiest time to travel, with long evenings and the best conditions for beaches and multi-day walks. March to May (autumn) and September to November (spring) are the value seasons — quieter roads, softer light and easier availability. June to August is winter: ski fields open, geothermal country is at its most atmospheric and lodges are at their quietest.

What are New Zealand's seasons and months?

New Zealand is in the Southern Hemisphere, so the seasons are the reverse of Europe and North America. Summer runs December to February, autumn March to May, winter June to August, and spring September to November.

What is the cheapest time to visit New Zealand?

The shoulder seasons — late March to May and September to November — usually offer the best combination of availability and value, along with winter outside the school holidays and the ski-field peaks. The most expensive and heavily booked window is late December to mid-January, when New Zealanders take their own summer holidays.

When is ski season in New Zealand?

The New Zealand ski season generally runs from June to early October around Queenstown, Wānaka and the central North Island, with exact opening and closing dates set each year by snow conditions. Confirm dates directly with each ski area before booking.

How many days do you need in New Zealand?

Ten to fourteen days is enough to travel one island properly. Two to three weeks lets you combine both islands without spending your holiday behind the wheel. Our itineraries run from five to twenty-one days so you can match the route to the time you actually have.
