(North Island) — Destination

Taupō.

Volcanic lake country

(01) — A field note

A lake the size of Singapore, the country's biggest river, and active volcanoes on the horizon — Taupō is the wide-open heart of the North Island.

01

The setting

Lake Taupō fills an ancient caldera left by one of the largest eruptions on Earth in the last 5,000 years. The town sits at the lake's north-east corner where the Waikato River — Aotearoa's longest — begins its journey to the Tasman. Tongariro National Park, a dual World Heritage area, lies an hour south.

02

How to eat

Lakefront cafés and casual bistros line Tongariro Street and the marina. For something special, book the Bistro at Huka Lodge or a long lunch overlooking Huka Falls. The drive south on State Highway 1 passes a string of trout-stream pubs.

03

Where to stay

Lakefront motels and apartments are walkable to town. For lodges and luxury, look to Acacia Bay, Kinloch and the legendary Huka Lodge on the Waikato River. National Park Village is the base for Tongariro skiing and crossing hikes.
