(North Island) — Destination

Wellington.

Creative capital

(01) — A field note

Wedged between hills and harbour, Aotearoa's capital is small, walkable, fiercely creative — and famously windy.

01

The setting

Te Whanganui-a-Tara Wellington squeezes onto a thin strip of land around a near-circular harbour. Everything — Parliament, Te Papa, the waterfront, Cuba Street, the cable car — is within a 25-minute walk. The Wellington Town Belt of native bush rings the centre.

02

How to eat

Per capita, Wellington has more cafés, restaurants and bars than New York. Cuba Street and Hannah Laneway are the heart of the indie food scene; Tory Street and the waterfront cover bigger occasion dining. Coffee is a city religion — start at Customs, Pour & Twist or Flight Coffee.

03

Where to stay

Boutique stays cluster on Willis Street, Cuba Quarter and the waterfront. For an off-beat option, look at Mt Victoria or the historic wooden cottages of Mt Cook within a short walk of town.
