City of sails

(01) — A field note

A harbour city of fifty volcanoes, two oceans and a hundred islands — Aotearoa's biggest gateway and its softest landing.

01

The setting

Tāmaki Makaurau Auckland sprawls across an isthmus between the Waitematā and Manukau harbours, built on (and around) 53 volcanic cones. Maungawhau / Mt Eden, North Head and Rangitoto Island all give 360° views of the city and Hauraki Gulf.

02

How to eat

The CBD's Britomart and Commercial Bay precincts host modern Pacific restaurants and natural-wine bars. Ponsonby Road is the city's café and brunch spine. Take the 40-minute ferry to Waiheke Island for vineyard lunches at Mudbrick, Cable Bay or Man O' War.

03

Where to stay

Design-led hotels cluster around Britomart and the Viaduct. For a slower pace, base yourself in Devonport (a 12-minute ferry across the harbour) or on Waiheke Island for a few nights of vineyard and beach time.

Best for
