Garden city reborn

(01) — A field note

Garden city, gateway to the Southern Alps, and a place still in conversation with itself — rebuilding from the 2011 earthquake into something genuinely new.

01

The setting

Ōtautahi Christchurch sits on the Canterbury Plains, with the braided Avon / Ōtākaro river winding through the centre. Since the 2010–11 earthquakes, the rebuilt CBD has become a showcase of modern architecture, street art and pocket parks — alongside surviving heritage like the Botanic Gardens (since 1863) and Hagley Park.

02

How to eat

Riverside Market in the central city pulls together producers, bakers and small eateries under one roof. The Terrace and New Regent Street are easy strolls between cocktail bars and restaurants. Day-trip 90 minutes north for the Waipara wine region, or south to Banks Peninsula for harbourside fish and chips in Akaroa.

03

Where to stay

Boutique hotels overlook Cathedral Square and the riverbank. For something quieter, stay in the leafy suburbs of Merivale or Fendalton, or push out to Akaroa (90 min) for French-influenced harbour-village life.
