(EXP) — Road Trips

The country is the journey.

Two long, narrow islands, light traffic, and a road network that links every coast worth seeing.

(Field notes) — 28 listings

New Zealand is built for road trips. Distances are short by global standards (Auckland to Wellington is a single day's drive, Christchurch to Queenstown another), and the country's most beautiful stretches are the ones connecting its named places.

Classic itineraries

The Pacific Coast Highway from Auckland to Napier (3–5 days). The Southern Scenic Route from Dunedin through the Catlins to Te Anau (4 days). The West Coast wilderness drive from Picton to Queenstown via Franz Josef (7 days). The Thermal Explorer from Auckland through Rotorua to Taupō (3 days).

Renting a vehicle

Pick up in one city, drop off in another — most rental companies allow it for a modest fee. Self-contained campervans give freedom and access to free or low-cost overnight stops; a regular car plus booked accommodation is more comfortable. Drive on the left; mountain roads are narrow but well-maintained.

Pace yourself

Plan two-thirds the distance you'd cover at home. Roads wind, scenery distracts, and the best stops are the unmarked ones — a roadside fruit stall, a beach with no one on it, a single-lane bridge over a turquoise river.
