(EXP) — Stay

Where to put your head down.

Boutique hotels, lakefront cabins, design-led B&Bs and farmstays — accommodation in New Zealand favours character over chain.

(Field notes) — 264 listings

The country has fewer big-brand hotels than most — and a lot more small, owner-run stays. A converted woolshed in Hawke's Bay, a glass cabin in the Mackenzie, a heritage hotel in Napier's art-deco quarter.

The categories

Lodges (fully inclusive, six to twelve suites), boutique hotels (15–60 rooms, design-led), B&Bs and homestays (often the warmest welcome), holiday homes (rented per week), and Department of Conservation huts (basic, beautiful, in the bush).

When to book

December–February is the busy season — book three months out for the best stays. April–May and October–November are quieter and often discounted. Winter rates around the ski fields jump again; rates elsewhere stay soft.

What to expect

Tax (GST, 15%) is included in displayed prices. Tipping is not expected. Most stays include breakfast or have it for $20–$35; lodges usually include dinner as well. Wi-Fi is universal but speeds vary in remote regions.
