  • Best time to go

    November to April. Northland is warm and swimmable well into May.

  • What to book ahead

    Bay of Islands cruises, Tongariro shuttles, Hawke's Bay dining, and all January accommodation.

  • Longest driving day

    Day 5 — around 4 hours 30 minutes via the Hokianga and Waipoua.

  • Road & weather

    Northland and Coromandel roads are narrow and slow. Tongariro weather is genuinely dangerous when it turns.

  • Travelling with children

    Swap the Alpine Crossing for the chairlift, and consider two nights on the Coromandel.

  • Where to add a night

    Waiheke Island, or a second night in Wellington before crossing to the South Island.
